Abstract

The Web and new technologies are increasingly important elements in contemporary society. They deeply structure our lives and the very way we interact with reality. For example, social media is transforming the way we shape personal identity and interpersonal relationships - as well as transforming political communication. Criteria imposed by search engine algorithms profoundly affect information that we will have easy access to and information that will be more difficult to find (Goldman, 2008, 2011; Kirchgaessner, 2019). GAFA (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon) is a quartet of private companies that combine to agglutinate unprecedented hegemonic power in the construction of the occidental cultural paradigm at an international level (Lindh, 2017). Nevertheless, a sufficiently structured socio-political analysis of the Web has not yet been developed. After observing the current ‘state of the art’ position in three different fields - philosophy of the Web, social sciences (linked to digital humanities) and political philosophy - I have identified a knowledge gap: socio-political effects of new technologies are hardly studied. As a result, I developed a proposal to link the ontology of the Web to a post-Marxist reading of society. From this new theoretical articulation, I aim at integrating research from the social sciences so as to develop a complex interdisciplinary approach. Strengthening and expanding the reach of the ontology of the Web will allow a better epistemic foundation of digital humanities. Also, by this means the understanding of identity changes related to the Web will be addressed in a broader perspective. The general objectives of the project are to contribute to the development of a socio-political understanding of the Web as a device that helps to modify power relationships and to shape cultural hegemony. Several attempts to develop an ontology of the Web have brought out interesting aspects of this reality. However, these first hints lack a more organic and general view. A complete ontology of the Web needs to observe the socio-political aspects of new technologies. The main objective of this project is to contribute to the work of digital humanities by reflecting on the political dimension of the Web. I will develop a philosophical discussion, trying to combine the proposals of some important researchers (Ferraris, Floridi, Han and the post-Marxist approach). This should provide a sufficiently solid framework for analysis. The theoretical results will then be compared with those of empirical studies from the social sciences. This will allow the epistemic validity of the framework to be tested and an analysis produced, encouraging the development of a stronger interdisciplinarity, thus enhancing the scope of digital humanities. As a result, this project should contribute to a better understanding of the Web as a social phenomenon and not just a technological one. The socio-political understanding of the Web will allow to insert it properly among the objects of study of the social sciences and humanities. This is a fundamental objective to ensure the scientific robustness of a new field of study - the digital humanities. Several attempts are developing in this direction, suggesting the contours of a mature ontology of the Web. The specific contribution of this project will consist in creating strong links between socio-political post-Marxist analysis and ontology of the Web. Testing this theoretical approach with the results of empirical research will help to strengthen interdisciplinary links within digital humanities. Such an understanding should also provide analytical tools which are socially useful and therefore beneficial for democratisation processes. In a broader sense, this study will also help to develop a better understanding of contemporary processes of identity construction.
