This paper discusses the application of big data and Web Intelligence to the fields of social sciences and humanities on the example of the Swiss Media Criticism portal, a platform that draws upon domain knowledge and text mining for analyzing media criticism published by mass media, Twitter, and major media-critical agents. After introducing a process for adapting big data technologies to new domains we elaborate on the application of this process to the area of media and communication science. The created Swiss Media Criticism portal provides researchers with effective means for locating, tracking and analyzing media criticism, supporting domain experts with advanced analytics and sophisticated visualizations. A case study that investigates the media coverage of the New Year's Eve sexual assaults in Cologne 2015 demonstrates the capabilities of the developed platform, illustrating how it aids scientists in better understanding the issues, dynamics and impacts of media criticism.
