Excessive anxiety, worrying and feelings of depression may lead persons to fix their attention on potential sources of danger, avoidance of problematic events and coping with negative emotions. This can result in a loss of attention to approaching goals and related personal strengths, capabilities and needs. The practice of psychotherapy is dedicated to societal tasks by helping individuals to reduce individual suffering and enhance well-being and psychosocial productivity. It is easy to be coerced into the medicalization of psychotherapy. Such a focus, however, can result in neglecting or underestimating the immense number of strengths, capabilities and coping skills that a patient brings into the therapy sessions. This article provides an overview of resource-oriented approaches in psychotherapy and promotes self-consciousness in representation of strengths-based principles in psychotherapy.
