Abstract

This article focuses on the way images and relics were used in order to convert Jews to Christendom at the beginning of the 15th century, when preachers, like St. Vincent Ferrer, Francesc Eiximenis and St. Bernard, criticized Jews and conversos as people corrupting the Christianos viejos (old Christians). In the Franciscan altarpiece by Lluis Borrassà painted in 1415, we find depicted criticism against Jews taking in consideration Dominican theology. Therefore, I shall point out the process of construction of the «otherness» of Jews as non-Christian people, linked to the apocalyptic Antichrist in Franciscan paintings realized in Spain at the beginning of the 14th century and which are related to the relics of Jesus like the Mandylion.
