Abstract
This article grapples with “Street workout,” an emergent and quasi-global trend of urban athletics, circulated on the Internet. It interrogates this trend by offering two contrasted and complementary perspectives. Alain Mueller discusses it as an anthropologist who practices ethnographic participatory immersion, and Guillemette Bolens questions it by means of kinesic analysis. Both authors focus on the videos that street workout practitioners post online (e.g. on Youtube or Facebook). Applying ethnographic methodology, Alain Mueller perceives the videos as ways of mediating his own embodied learning of street-workout-related techniques, while Bolens pays attention to movements that take place in the “margins” of the videos. In both cases, the authors raise the issues of accounting for and writing about the perception of motion.
