Cognitive biases are frequently mentioned in discussions about rationality. The psychological research teaches us that cognitive biases are the result of evolutionary mechanisms, there to help us think and react more efficiently. At the same cognitive biases are characterized by the same disciplines as responsible for frequent mistakes in reasoning. The ontological and epistemological status of cognitive biases still remain unclear. This encyclopaedic entry examines the topic of cognitive bias from a philosophical point of view and offers to clarify its status.
