Das Projekt erforscht Geschichte, Repertoire und Funktionen kleinformatiger Fagotte des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts
Lay summary

Über 70 kleinere Fagotte aus dem 18. und 19. Jahrhundert sind bisher als «fagottini», «bassonetti», «tenoroon», Quart-, Quint-, Sext- oder Oktavfagotte weltweit in Museen und Privatsammlungen bekannt. Merkmale, Funktionen, Repertoire und Musikpraxis dieser Instrumente der Fagottfamilie sind bislang allerdings weitgehend unerforscht. Nachweislich wurden sie für pädagogische Zwecke eingesetzt, aber es finden sich auch Werke mit solistischer, kammermusikalischer und Orchester-Besetzung, in denen explizit Fagotte kleineren Formats verlangt werden. Durch oftmals ungenaue Bezeichnungen und die Unkenntnis des musikalischen Zusammenhangs bleiben vielfältige Fragen nach der jeweils angemessenen Instrumentengrösse, der Klanglichkeit und Ästhetik offen und erfordern die Neubewertung des Repertoires.

Ziel dieses anwendungsorientierten Forschungsprojekts ist die organologische und musikalische Erforschung dieser kleineren Fagotte. Es wird zunächst ein detaillierter Katalog der erhaltenen Originalinstrumente erstellt werden. Die Auswertung der Messdaten und die systematische Durchsicht der musikalischen wie pädagogischen Quellen sollen ein klareres Profil der kleineren Fagotte und ihres Repertoires ergeben sowie ihren musikhistorischen Kontext erschliessen.

 

Wissenschaftlicher und gesellschaftlicher Kontext

Dieses Projekt erfasst und evaluiert umfangreiche organologische Daten und kombiniert die Erkenntnisse daraus mit denjenigen aus extensiven Repertoireforschungen. So werden wissenschaftliche und musikpraktische Ansätze kombiniert zur Erforschung historischer kleinformatiger Fagotte. Das Projekt ist als Pilotstudie angelegt und soll dazu führen, die «fagottini» längerfristig in die musikalische Praxis und in die Pädagogik des Fagottspiels zurück zu bringen.

Abstract

More than 70 small-scale bassoons from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, alternately known as ‘fagottini’, ‘bassonetti’, ‘tenoroons’, ‘quart-, ‘quint-, ‘sext- and ‘octave-bassoons’, have been identified in private collections and museums throughout Europe and the Americas, while others are still being discovered. Definite evidence exists of their pedagogical use, along with compositions specifying smaller-sized bassoons in orchestral, chamber, and solo settings, an indication that they formerly played multi-functional roles in musical and cultural life before virtually disappearing in the twentieth century. While historical performance practices of other wind instrument families have received researchers’ attention, the functions and repertoire of these smaller instruments have been largely ignored. Imprecise terminology is widespread, leading to questions regarding choice of appropriate instrument size, as well as the necessity to re-evaluate repertoire. The goal of this use-inspired pilot project is an organological and musicological investigation of fagottino and tenoroon, resulting in a comprehensive instrument catalogue, evaluation and comparison of instrument dimensions, as well as suggested repertoire with contextual information.
