Lay Summary (English)

Lay summary
Drawings, diagrams and other types of visualization have always been an integral part of scientific activity. Since ancient times people used visualizations together with texts to express scientific knowledge. This project aims to investigate the production and usage of scientific illustrations, their specific content and their changing over time. Two case studies from entirely different disciplines and epoches were selected for closer examination: astronomical diagrams of the early Middle Ages and botanical illustrations of the 18th and early 19th century. Both case studies emphasize the combination of historical with methodological and philosophical issues. Integral part of the research objectives is the development of a methodological model to explain the processes of the formation of knowledge expressed by scientific illustrations.
