Entzündungskrankheiten stellen eines der grossen, ungelösten Gesundheitsproblemen unserer Gesellschaft dar. Persönlich zugeschnittene Lebensstielanpassungen können helfen solche chronische Entzündungen zu reduzieren. Im Rahmen dieses Projektes, werden wir unsere neuartigen Entzündungs-Selbst-Tests zur Marktreife bringen. Damit können betroffene Personen ihre Entzündungsblutwerte überwachen um die optimalen individuellen Massnahmen heraus zu finden, die ihre Gesundheit verbessern können.

Wissenschaftlicher und gesellschaftlicher Kontext des Forschungsprojekts

Über 50% der Bevölkerung leidet an Krankheiten, die mit chronischen Entzündungen in Verbindung gebracht werden. Zahlreiche wissenschaftlichen Studien haben gezeigt, dass Lebensstielanpassungen wie Diäten oder sportliche Aktivität chronische Entzündungen effektiv reduzieren können. Allerdings reagiert jede Person unterschiedlich auf solche Anpassungen. Unsere erschwinglichen, leicht zugänglichen und quantitativen Entzündungs-Selbst-Tests ermöglichen es die eigenen Blutwerte zu beobachten. Damit ermöglichen wir den Anwendern zu verstehen, wie alltägliche Entscheidungen ihre Gesundheit beeinflussen und ermöglichen es dadurch ein gesünderes Leben zu führen.

 

Inhalt und Ziel des Forschungsprojekts

Wir verfügen bereits über einen voll funktionsfähigen Prototypen für die Quantifizierung von Entzündungsblutmarkern. Das Ziel dieses Projektes ist die Transformation unseres Prototyps in ein integriertes, handliches Produkt. Damit werden wir demonstrieren, dass sich unsere Technologie hervorragend für Selbst-Tests Zuhause eignet.

Nachdem unsere Tests mithilfe von Benutzerstudien weiter verbessert wurden, werden wir sie auch für medizinische Anwendungen zertifizieren. Diese Selbst-Tests für Zuhause werden mittelfristig zu einem Durchbruch von Telemedizindienstleistungen führen.

Abstract

Over 50% of people suffer from diseases related to chronic inflammation. Countless studies have demonstrated that lifestyle adjustments such as improved diets or increased physical activity can be highly effective at reducing chronic inflammation and reduce long term disease risks. Inflammation levels are accurately quantified by the concentration of C-Reactive Protein (CRP). While CRP levels can be tested reliably in centralized facilities, such medical tests are expensive, cumbersome, and not available on-demand to the general public. What our society lacks is an affordable, convenient, quantitative, and accurate test that can be performed often enough to inform non-medical lifestyle choices effectively. Therefore, most people cannot observe how their daily choices significantly impact their health. Making this connection visible through a quantitative inflammation test will help to motive users to live a healthier life. To serve this need, I invented a novel technology that enables blood CRP lifestyle tests at home. This breakthrough quantitative readout technology adds the needed accuracy to rapid tests. The resulting digital hand-held rapid test is accurate, cheap, fast, and easy to use simultaneously. The technology is adaptable for almost any protein biomarker of interest. To address inflammation as a first use-case, I have developed a fully functional lab prototype for measuring CRP blood values with a 50-fold improved accuracy versus commercially available rapid tests to date. The vision of this BRIDGE Proof of Concept project is to improve and adapt this prototype and to create a minimum viable product optimized for user-friendliness, which demonstrates the applicability of this technology for self-testing at home. To achieve this goal, I will integrate all components into a single hand-held device and perform early user-testing to optimize the device for the needs of the customers. The resulting health test will support optimal lifestyle choices and not be applied in medical settings such as the diagnosis or treatment of diseases. Thus, the test entails low user risks without the necessity for regulatory clearance by a notified body. This strategy allows the future startup, Hemetron, to reach niche early adopters very quickly and efficiently with the development of a prototype. Learning from these early users will allow Hemetron to mature and to optimize the CRP home test. At that advanced stage, the test will undergo regulatory clearance for medical use cases. Home-based rapid tests for medical conditions will lead to a breakthrough in telemedicine, by allowing accurate CRP measurements during at-home telemedical consultations.
