Grâce à des processus informatiques, Narratives vise à combler le fossé entre les archives numériques et le monde participatif de l’expérience muséologique.

Narratives s’appuie sur quatre archives audiovisuelles européennes notables provenant de la Radio Télévision Suisse, des collections du Comité international olympique, des archives du Festival de jazz de Montreux classées dans le registre «Mémoire du monde» de l’UNESCO, et du Eye Filmmuseum aux Pays-Bas. Ces vastes collections numériques nécessitent de nouvelles solutions de mise à disposition du public.

 

Dirigé par des experts en machine learning, en vision par ordinateur, en analyse visuelle, en muséologie numérique et en archivistique, Narratives met en place un nouveau cadre interdisciplinaire de muséologie computationnelle à travers trois objectifs clés. En premier lieu, effectuer des transformations computationnelles dans la conservation des données qui permettront d’enrichir les archives conventionnelles d’une signification sémantique plus riche. Deuxièmement, concevoir un cadre de visualisation narrative combinant les sémantiques spatio-temporelle, sociale, esthétique et affective, afin de créer de nouveaux formats de narration audiovisuelle. Troisièmement, développer des plateformes pour la navigation, l’exploration et la réorganisation créative d’images en mouvement par le biais de systèmes immersifs et interactifs afin d’ouvrir ces archives à un public plus large. En faisant progresser la théorie muséologique et archivistique en tandem avec la pratique vers une approche systémique, Narratives promet d’introduire des précédents transdisciplinaires à travers la science, la culture et l’industrie.

 

Les archives suisses ont réalisé des investissements exemplaires dans la numérisation et la conservation du patrimoine culturel audiovisuel, mais la grande majorité de ces collections reste inaccessible à la société au sens large. Pour remédier à cette lacune, Narratives mettra en place un cadre de visualisation avant-gardiste permettant de (re)découvrir de manière interactive des centaines de milliers d’heures de matériel audiovisuel. Tout en respectant les contraintes liées aux droits d’auteur archivistiques, le projet validera les efforts déployés depuis de nombreuses années en matière de préservation et de conservation numériques en Suisse et à l’étranger, afin d’assurer la pérennité de notre patrimoine collectif.

Through computational processes, ‘Narratives’ sets out to address and resolve the gap between digital archives and the participatory world of museological experience.

Narratives draws on four significant European audiovisual archives: Radio Télévision Suisse, the International Olympic Committee collections, the UNESCO Memory of the World listed Montreux Jazz Festival archive, and the Netherland’s Eye Filmmuseum – vast digital collections that require new solutions to make them available to the public.

Led by experts in machine learning, computer vision, visual analytics, digital museology, and archival science, Narratives initiates a novel interdisciplinary framework of computational museology through three key objectives. First, to deliver computational transformations in the data curation that will augment conventional archives with richer semantic meaning. Second, to design a narrative visualization framework, combining spatio-temporal, social, aesthetic and affective semantics to pioneer new audiovisual storytelling formats. Third, to develop platforms for the navigation, exploration and creative reorganization of moving images through immersive and interactive systems to open up these archives to wider audiences. Advancing museological and archival theory in tandem with practice toward a systems approach, Narratives promises to introduce transdisciplinary precedents across science, culture and industry.

Swiss archives have made exemplary investments in the digitization and curation of audiovisual cultural heritage yet the vast majority of these collections remain inaccessible to broader society. To address this shortcoming, Narratives will initiate a groundbreaking visualization framework for interactively (re)discovering hundreds of thousands of hours of audiovisual materials. While respecting archival copyright constraints, the project will validate many years of effort in digital preservation and curation in Switzerland and internationally to ensure the sustainability of our collective heritage.
