Lay Summary (English)

Lead
Despite the fact that lyric poetry is a literary genre often studied at university level, critical approaches to the lyric tend to limit their object of study to printed texts, in a single language, representing one specific literary culture. Any study of the lyric today has to acknowledge the influence of digitization and the new media as well as the different forms poetry may take. The existence of disparate national and/or linguistic critical traditions also has to be taken into consideration. Even apparently identical words such as ‘lyric’ in English, ‘lírico’ in Spanish, ‘Lyrik’ in German or ‘lyrisme’ in French prove to have quite different meanings in practice.

Content and aims of the research project

The project aims to overcome existing national, linguistic and disciplinary boundaries in order to gain a better understanding of contemporary lyric poetry at an international level and to establish the study of the genre as a unified field of research. To achieve this, the project will create an international open-access handbook on the study of lyric poetry. Taking a shared critical vocabulary as a starting point, the project will investigate topics ranging from the poetic practices of classical antiquity to the multimedia corpora of the digital age. Lyric poetry will thus be treated as a fundamentally intermedial genre that requires new interdisciplinary approaches. We will thus approach lyric poetry as an international field of research and establish cross-disciplinary cooperation in order to examine the resulting divergent critical terminologies. We will place a particular emphasis on the analysis of literary texts in different media, but also on the relations between space, language and culture in the lyric. Finally, the project is an opportunity to bring together scholars working in different linguistic and methodological traditions in a common critical endeavour.

Scientific and social context of the research project

Since lyric poetry is an increasingly popular field of study, it is all the more important to improve our understanding of both shared and divergent concepts of lyric to create a better basis for scholarly criticism. To this end, this project will draw on a variety of linguistic, interdisciplinary, cross-media and conceptual approaches.

Abstract

Even though lyric poetry may appear to some extent as a global or a transhistorical phenomenon, the main notions in that field have different meanings. Words like ‘lyric’ in English, ‘Lyrik’ in German or ‘lyrisme’ in French have different extensions. These differences affect the research on lyric poetry, which has largely remained fragmented along linguistic, national and disciplinary lines. The main hypothesis of this project is that in order to understand contemporary lyric poetry, we need to overcome the current national, linguistic and disciplinary limitations of research in lyric poetry. More specifically, this project proposes an international open-access handbook on the study of lyric poetry that will take a closer look at:•the digital age that implies multimedia corpora (published poetry, songs, videos) and is built as a living open-access handbook.•a genre that is known for combining writing, image and sound in an innovative way which requires new interdisciplinary approaches.•an international field of research, fragmented by divergent terminologies, which could address the now global phenomenon of lyrical poetry through cross-disciplinary cooperation.•an international group of applicants and an extended international board which are able to bring together scholars in different languages and on different methodologies (sociology, philosophy, gender, postcolonial, media-studies).•a project that is related to worldwide events (Fribourg 2015, Boston 2017, Lausanne 2019) we organized in Switzerland and with the International Network for the Study of Lyric (INSL) and could underline the strengths of a scientific model for poetry between disciplines and languages. In addition, two selected topic areas of relevance to the analysis of lyric poetry will be explored in greater depth by junior researchers within the framework of individual projects: The methods of the analysis of lyric in different media networks and the relations on space, language and culture in lyric. In this way, one of the aims of the handbook is also explored, namely to stimulate an internationally informed analysis on lyric poetry.Since lyric poetry and its study is currently enjoying increasing esteem and appreciation, a better understanding of the conceptual similarities and differences not only promises a better basis for scholarly criticism, but also the establishment of the study of lyric poetry as a branch of research.
