The analysis will focus on the genesis and impact of psychiatric expertise. On the one hand we aim at investigating the development of a child psychiatric thought style that connects social origin with genetic theory and disciplining ideas, resulting in the practice of coercive removal of children from their families. On the other hand, we ask for the power of psychiatric expertise on the biographies of children and adolescents, which were placed in institutions or foster families. For differentiated results, we prefer a longitudinal study over a relevant period of five decades to compare historical influences on scientific discourses. The medical system of norms shows a close relationship to the moral values of every specific era. The physician's function as an expert in public health is associated with growing influence not only on individual families, but on the whole of society. Since the 1920's, an increase in the use of psychiatric expertise as a standard element in child placement can be observed. This important role of psychiatric expertise in the outplacement of children and adolescents has hardly been investigated, even though the associated questions matter to the present day. The study will close this gap with a quantitative and qualitative analysis of patient documents from an institution for children and adolescents, specialized in psychiatric diagnostics, namely the child psychiatric observation ward Stephansburg/Brüschhalde in the canton of Zurich. In order to complement the analysis with the patient view we will conduct and analyse interviews with former inmates of the mentioned child observation ward Brüschhalde, if necessary also with close relatives.
