Der CERN LHC Teilchenbeschleuniger ermöglicht die Messung einer Vielzahl fundamentaler Streuprozesse mit hoher Genauigkeit und bei nie zuvor erreichten Energien. Um diese Messdaten zur Bestimmung physikalischer Parameter (z.B. Teilchenmassen und Kopplungskonstanten) und zur Suche nach neuen physikalischen Effekten zu benutzen, muss die theoretische Beschreibung dieser Streureaktionen ein den Daten entsprechendes Niveau an Präzision erreichen.
Lay summary
In der Elementarteilchentheorie werden Präzisionsvorhersagen durch die Berechnung von Quantenkorrekturen ermöglicht. Eine besondere Herausforderung ist hierbei, die spezifischen Eigenschaften jeder Messung (z.B. geometrische Akzeptanz des Detektors) in der theoretischen Beschreibung abzubilden. Um dies zu erreichen, wird die theoretische Berechnung in der Regel in Form eines Simulationsprogramms implementiert, welches dann den vollständigen Verlauf der experimentellen Datenanalyse reproduziert.

Im Rahmen dieses Projektes werden wir Techniken zur präzisen Berechnung von Streureaktionen weiterentwickeln, insbesondere um Reaktionen mit einer hohen Anzahl von Teilchen im Endzustand effizient beschreiben zu können. Diese technischen Entwicklungen werden es uns ermöglichen, verbesserte theoretische Vorhersagen für eine Reihe von Präzisionsobservablen zu berechnen. Mit Hilfe dieser neuen Berechnungen können dann anhand von LHC Daten beispielsweise die Eigenschaften des Higgs-Bosons und der elektroschwachen Eichbosonen zu hoher Genauigkeit bestimmt werden.

Abstract

The CERN LHC provides precision measurements of a large number fundamental scattering reactions at the highest energies ever reached at a particle collider. To turn these data into determinations of particle properties and coupling constants, and to optimally exploit them in searches for indirect signatures of new physics effects, an equally high level of precision is required in the theoretical description of the observed cross sections. This objective requires the inclusion of higher order perturbation theory corrections into a framework that properly accounts for the experimental boundary conditions (kinematical acceptance, event reconstruction) of each measurement. It is accomplished by rearranging potentially singular higher-order contributions from individual subprocesses using a so-called subtraction method. In this project, we aim for conceptual advances of the antenna subtraction method for second-order (next-to-next-to-leading order, NNLO) QCD calculations, addressing the treatment of identified particles in the final state, its efficient extension to high multiplicity reactions, and the modularity of subtraction terms and particle decays required for a full automation. These developments will be implemented in the NNLOJET code, a parton-level event generator for the NNLO-accurate description of collider processes. The conceptual and technical work proceeds in parallel with the calculation of higher-order corrections to specific high-precision observables, and the application of these calculations in phenomenological studies of collider data. (A) For vector boson production processes, we will combine the NNLO calculations for V+0j and V+1j with each other and with a parton shower, in view of systematically improving the extraction of the W mass at the LHC; investigate photon-plus-jet production with realistic isolation criteria; and start work on the NNLO corrections to V+2j. (B) In Higgs boson production through gluon fusion, we will quantify the quark mass effects at large transverse momentum; investigate the effect of QCD corrections on kinematical distributions in dominant and rare decay modes; and work towards a fully differential description at N3LO. (C) On jet production observables, we will investigate the implications of NNLO corrections to hadron collider and deep inelastic scattering processes on the determination of parton distributions and the strong coupling constant from experimental data; and exploit the conceptual improvements to the antenna subtraction in the computation of NNLO corrections to pp -> 3j.
