Ce projet interdisciplinaire finance les activités scientifiques suisses autour du satellite scientifique Euclid de l'ESA, dont le lancement est prévu pour 2020. Le projet couvre la période cruciale juste avant le lancement et se fonde sur l'expertise suisse acquise en une décennie de recherche dans le domaine de la cosmologie, en particulier via le satellite Planck de l'ESA. Euclid est la prochaine grande mission cosmologique de l'ESA.
Lay summary

Euclid va cartographier 15'000 degrés carrés du ciel extragalactique aussi bien dans l'optique que dans l'infrarouge. Il produira l'image de 2 milliards de galaxies et des spectres pour 50 millions d'entre elles. Ces données permettront d'implémenter plusieurs sondes cosmologiques complémentaires telles que les Oscillations Acoustiques Baryoniques, les distorsions dans l'espace des redshifts, le comptage des amas de galaxies, l'effet Sachs-Wolfe Intégré et l'effet de lentille gravitationnelle faible. Non seulement les implications cosmologiques seront exceptionnelles, mais les données elles-mêmes consisterons en un incroyable observatoire virtuel pour les prochaines générations d'astrophysiciens et de cosmologistes. Euclid est la première mission spatiale qui étudie le problème posé par l'expansion accélérée de l'univers et ses implications pour la matière et l'énergie sombres. Dans le contexte théorique actuel, soit cette dernière rend compte de 70% du budget énergétique de l'univers, soit notre description de la loi de la gravitation décrite par la relativité générale doit être révisée aux échelles cosmologiques. L'Europe et la Suisse sont en situation privilégiée pour mener à son but la mission Euclid avec un impact profond en cosmologie, en astrophysique et en physique en général. Le présent projet couvre une large gamme d'expertises en physique théorique, cosmologie, calculs numériques à haute performance, architecture d'ordinateurs, mathématique et ingénierie, réparties sur 4 noeuds: EPFL, UniGE, UniZH, FHNW.

Abstract

This interdisciplinary SINERGIA proposal is intended to fund Swiss activities around the ESA Euclid cosmology mission, scheduled for launch in 2020. It covers the crucial pre-launch period 2017-2021 and capitilizes both on the Swiss expertise in the Planck CMB experiment and on the decade of effort that led to the adoption of Euclid by ESA in 2012 as its next key cosmology mission. The Euclid satellite will survey 15'000 square degree of sky with wide-field optical and near-IR cameras and a near-IR spectrograph, providing the images of 2 billion galaxies and spectra for 50 million of them with unprecedented quality. The data will allow to implement several complementary cosmological probes including Baryonic Accoustic Oscillations (BAO), Redshift Space Distortion (RSD), galaxy cluster number counts, the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect, and weak gravitational lensing. Not only the cosmological implications will be exceptional, but the legacy value of the Euclid data, on their own, will consist in an invaluable virtual observatory for generations of astrophysicists and cosmologists.Euclid is the first space mission to address the problem posed by the observed acceleration of the expansion of the universe, implying either a form of repulsive dark energy accounting for 70% of the mass-energy budget of the universe or that General Relativity is not the correct description of gravity on cosmological scales. Europe and Switzerland have the privilege to lead this mission, with profound impact on cosmology, astrophysics and physics.Our project is based on a previous SINERGIA Euclid grant obtained for the preparation of the mission. It covers a wide range of expertise, in theoretical physics, astrophysics, cosmology, High Performance Computing (HPC), computer architecture, mathematics and electrical engineering, spread over 4 nodes at EPFL, UniGE, UniZH, FHNW. While the Swiss responsibilities for the hardware of Euclid are covered by a PRODEX grant (Paltani, UniGE), this SNSF SINERGIA proposal led by EPFL will allow us to fulfill all Swiss responsibilities in the Scientific Ground Segment (SGS) of the mission. At the same time, we will carry out scientific research in relation with Euclid but with existing public data and numerical simulations that will both produce scientific results and serve as a test bench for Euclid.
