Für viele Fragestellungen bei der Untersuchung des Ursprunges und der Entwicklung unserer Planeten spielt das Wissen um deren derzeitige chemische Zusammensetzung eine zentrale Rolle. Zusätzlich ist auch die Isotopenverteilung mancher chemischer Elemente von wesentlicher Bedeutung, z.B. als Zeuge für die Entwicklung des Objektes, für die Altersbestimmung eines Objektes oder als Anzeichen eines eventuellen biologischen Ursprungs des untersuchten planetarem Materials. Sowohl Messungen von Bodenmaterial wie auch der Atmosphäre sind notwendig.

Inhalt und Ziel des Forschungsprojekts

Zur Erforschung der Merkuratmosphäre haben wir ein Massenspektrometer entwickelt, welches auf der Raumsonde BepiColombo/ESA 2018 zum Merkur fliegen, und die chemische Zusammensetzung der Atmosphäre messen wird. Aus diesen Daten werden wir mit Hilfe unseres Atmosphärenmodels die chemische Zusammensetzung des Merkurbodens ermitteln. Merkur, als innerster Planet, und mit einer sehr alten Oberfläche, ist ein wichtiger Informant für die Entstehungsgeschichte der terrestrischen Planeten.  

Zur Erforschung von Jupiters Eismonden entwickeln wir ein hochempfindliches Massenspektrometer für die Atmosphären von Europa, Ganymed und Kallisto. Der Start der Raumsonde JUICE/ESA ist für 2022 angesetzt. Diese Monde sind gemeinsam mit Jupiter aus der ursprünglichen protosolaren Gas- und Staubscheibe entstanden, haben sich jedoch chemisch anders entwickelt als Jupiter, was Rückschlüsse auf den Entstehungsprozess dieser Monde und die ursprüngliche Scheibe erlaubt. 

Wir entwickeln kompakte Laserablations Massenspektrometer für den Einsatz auf Raumsonden die für eine Landung auf planetaren Körpern vorgesehen sind. Zwei solche Instrumente bauen wir für die Luna-Resurs und Luna-Glob Mission. Diese Instrumente führen autonom chemische Analysen von Material von der Oberfläche und dem nahen Untergrund durch, sowie die Bestimmung von deren Isotopenverteilung (z.B. Bleiisotope zur Altersbestimmung des Gesteins oder Schwefelisotope für potentielles biologisches Material).

Wissenschaftlicher und gesellschaftlicher Kontext des Forschungsprojekts

Unsere Arbeit wird neue Informationen über die chemische Zusammensetzung des polaren Mondbodens liefern, das flüchtige Material erfassen (Wasser, Methan, ...) welches im Oberflächengestein enthalten ist und quantifizieren. Durch die Entwicklung von leistungsstarken und sehr kompakten wissenschaftlichen Instrumenten, ist deren Anwendung für die Feldforschung auf der Erde denkbar, wo portable Geräte gefragt sind.

Abstract

The in situ group of the Space Research and Planetology division of the Physikalisches Institut is currently engaged in several major international related space projects. Four missions are presently in high activity phases.Moon: To study chemical composition of the soils at the lunar poles, we contribute two instruments to the Luna-Resurs and Luna-Glob missions, a neutral gas mass spectrometer for the study of volatiles and a laser mass spectrometer for the study of solids. Currently, we are in the major hardware phase of testing engineering models, and building and integrating flight models. This project also allows us to expand our experimental expertise into the analytical technique of gas-chromatography mass spectrometry, which only very few groups in space science worldwide can do. Mercury: For BepiColombo, the ESA mission to explore Mercury, we almost finished the hardware phase. What remains for the coming years are tests and calibrations of flight-spare instruments (ELENA, PICAM, STROFIO, and ENA). During the larger part of the grant period the STROFIO calibration data will be analysed and formulated as calibration software library, which will be needed once flight data becomes available. To prepare for the science phase, we will improve the Mercury exosphere model, based on recently published MESSENGER/NASA results on the surface and exosphere composition. This model will also be used to assist in the planning of the STROFIO operations in Mercury orbit.iJupiter and its moons: For JUICE, the L-class mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) to explore the Jupiter system, we provide the neutral gas mass spectrometer (NIM) and contribute to the particle consortium (PEP). We will investigate the chemical composition of the icy moons Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. We develop prototypes of our instrument to test against the physical and environmental conditions expected in the Jupiter environment, and measurements near these moons. To support the science phase of JUICE, we started unique laboratory experiments simulating the icy surfaces of these moons and their response to particle radiation in forming their exospheres. Results of these studies feed into our theoretical models of the atmospheres of these moons.The Interstellar Gas: Currently we are highly active in the science phase of the IBEX mission where we analyse flight data to investigate the local interstellar medium and its interaction with the heliosphere. IBEX continues to produce exciting data and is scheduled to operate well into the next solar minimum around 2020. As follow-up to the successful IBEX mission NASA selected the IMAP mission, for which the teams will be selected in fall 2017. Like for IBEX, we are also part of the SwRI, TX, USA, team and contribute to dedicated instrumentation for IMAP. Research and development of has already started and is needed to support to IMAP mission definition. In addition to the present participations we are active in proposing to new missions to assure our later participation. These proposals are toward the medium class missions of ESA (M5 call) and the Discovery and New Frontier mission classes of NASA. The uncertainty associated with the highly competitive mission selection requires us to be prepared to make rapid decisions on involvement once the space agencies selected a mission. Planning in experimental space science for the mid-term future requires continued work on development of space instrumentation and implementation of new technologies, since instruments for space research are always custom designs for the specific requirements of a mission and the scientific questions to be addressed. Many of our participations in the space missions are based on novel instrumentation, highly specialised laboratory activities and their continuous technical support.
