Viele Psychiater in Europa sammelten um die Wende zum 20. Jahrhundert Werke von Patienten. Sie untersuchten Fragen zu Geisteskrankheiten oder verglichen die Werke mit der Kunst der Avantgarde. In einer Ausstellung zeigen wir hundert bisher unbekannte Werke, die durch ihre Vielfalt und Komplexität beeindrucken. Es ist wichtig, diese Dokumente aus dem Leben gesellschaftlich abgesonderter Menschen zu sammeln und aufzubereiten, denn sie sind verdichtete Statements dazu, wie Normalität um 1900 verhandelt wurde.

Die Ausstellung soll dazu anregen, die Bestände europaweit zu sichern und zu erforschen. Sie zeigt die Komplexität und künstlerische Bedeutung dieser (zumeist) Laienwerke auf. Sie lassen sich in mehreren Zusammenhängen verorten und verhandeln diese auf ästhetischer Ebene: jenen von Anstalt und Behandlung, Sozialgeschichte, Geschlechterrollen, Kunst, Technik und Alltagskultur, normativen Aushandlungen, Inklusion und Ausschluss. Diese Zusammenhänge und ihre Ausstrahlung auf die Kunst der Gegenwart werden in der Ausstellung dokumentiert. Die Ausstellungstexte erscheinen in der Landes- ebenso wie in leichter Sprache, denn Menschen mit besonderen Bedürfnissen und Psychiatrieerfahrene sind als Experten explizit willkommen. Ein Begleitprogramm bietet Fachleuten, Erfahrenen und Betroffenen die Gelegenheit, sich über aktuelle Aspekte des Themas auszutauschen. Die Ausstellung wird  vom 10. Oktober 2018 bis 20. Januar 2019 im Museum der Sammlung Prinzhorn in Heidelberg gezeigt (mit Symposium) und vom 12. Februar bis 24. April 2019 mit einem vielfältigen Begleitprogramm im Kunstmuseum Thun. Sie regt zum Austausch über die Landesgrenzen hinweg an. Das Projekt ist eine Initiative des Forschungsvorhabens „Bewahren besonderer Kulturgüter“, welches mit Unterstützung des SNF von 2006 bis 2014 am Institute for Cultural Studies in the Arts an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste angesiedelt war. Das Ergebnis dieses Forschungsvorhabens ist eine Bilddatenbank mit über 5000 Werken, die das Inventar aller in der Schweiz erhaltenen Sammlungen darstellt. Sie ist am Schweizerischen Institut für Kunstwissenschaft der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Das Ausstellungsprojekt wird vom Schweizerischen Nationalfonds/Agora, dem Schweizerischen Institut für Kunstwissenschaft und Pro Helvetia unterstützt.

From 2006 to 2014, Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) hosted a research project entitled “Preserving Special Cultural Treasures.” Funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, a team of researchers surveyed the artworks created by the inmates of Swiss psychiatric hospitals in the period between 1850 and 1930. Comprising over 5,000 works, the resulting image database is now publicly accessible at the Swiss Institute for Art Research. Historical collections of such works were found in 19 of the 26 mental institutions in Switzerland. Some established small museums to exhibit the works, because at the turn of the century such art and the issues associated with it attracted great interest among psychiatrists and the wider public: questions concerning mental illness, perception, and the imagination were as common as comparisons with the “primitive” and the avant-garde. Artworks produced by patients were collected or assembled for exhibition across Europe. The surviving case files and patient records, now often housed in state archives, contain drawings or photographs of objects. Long neglected, these complex documents from the lives of individuals cut off from society are very much worth collecting and preparing for display. The planned exhibition aims to encourage efforts to preserve and to explore these collections across Europe. The Zurich Project may serve as a model of best practice for the surveying and preservation of such artworks. The exhibition reveals the complexity and the artistic significance of what are (mostly) the works of lay artists. These works can be placed within several contexts as well as negotiated aesthetically: institution and treatment, social history, gender roles, art, technology and everyday culture, normative negotiations, inclusion and exclusion. The exhibition texts will be published in the respective national language. Every effort will be made to make texts readily accessible since the exhibition explicitly welcomes visitors with special needs and those with personal experiences of psychiatry. The programme accompanying the exhibition will offer experts, persons with experiences of psychiatry, and those affected by its theme an opportunity to discuss current aspects of the issue. The exhibition will be shown at the Musée d’art moderne, d’art contemporain et d’art brut in Lille (possible: Summer 2018 or Summer 2019: to be confirmed), Prinzhorn Collection in Heidelberg (10 October 2018 - 20 Januar 2019) and the Kunstmuseum Thun (12 February - 24 April 2019 or 26 August - 20 November 2019). The project is supported by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia.
