Abstract

Research in the various fields of social sciences is directly relevant to the lives and concerns of everybody living in our society. But, the work of researchers in this domain is little known, and little taught in primary schools or high schools. In this project, several members of our faculty (the Geneva School of Social Sciences, G3S) have joined their forces to create a way to disseminate the kind of knowledge they produce on demographic trends and international migrations in Switzerland in the general public, focusing firstly on students of secondary schools of the Geneva canton. To this end, we wish to create an interactive touchscreen table, which will be used to create opportunities for us to talk about our work with these students and make them learn some facts and tools related to our field of competence. This table will include not only multimedia material (videos, photos, text), but also interactive tools, such as educational games, or animations where the users will be able to directly observe how variations of different parameters in a given situation can produce specific effects, analyzable by the tools used in our fields of research. The purpose of this project is to have the participants "play" with this tool, and the researchers talk about it with them. We seek to give rise to an interactive relationship between a researcher and the users who will (i) learn thematic information and concepts, (ii) become more familiar with what social sciences are (iii) participate to the (simulations of) research by providing themselves inputs for some of the interactive animations.
