We propose to fund one Ph.D. student to measure rare leptonic B decays with the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. After our successful observation of the decay Bs -> mu mu with the CMS experiment in summer 2013, the next steps will consist in measuring the effective Bs -> mu mu lifetime and obtaining the first evidence for the decay B0 -> mu mu. Building on our successful observation of Bs -> mu mu, the project will focus on the following points: (1) development of an improved muon identification algorithm, (2) measurement of rare hadronic B decays to obtain their normalization and calibration of their mass distribution (peak and width), (3) substantial improvement of the unbinned maximum likelihood for the determination of the final results.
