Abstract

We, as researchers, sometimes have difficulties in communicating research insights and results in a way that is easily (understandable and) accessible to the broader public. Indeed, increasing specialization in research-and a concomitant specialized vocabulary-makes it difficult to interact with people outside one’s discipline and one’s institution. The present project attempts to explore new avenues in public un-derstanding of science. Under the label “Little Green Bags,” professors from our university will use short animated films to present their research themes. Alluding to academic seminars during lunch time, the so-called “brown bag lunches”, the video series “Little Green Bags” offers nibbles of knowledge for the broader public. The short videos use story-telling elements and a metaphorically rich language, which help viewers grasping complex content. In addition to the distribution of the video clips via YouTube, the project includes DVDs and face-to-face interaction in form of conferences and discussions.
