Eichtheorien bilden die Grundlage unseres Verständnisses der Interaktionen zwischen den Elementarteilchen. Quantenelektrodynamik sowie die Theorien der schwachen und starken nuklearen Kraft sind Eichtheorien. Trotz des grossen Erfolgs von Eichtheorien und intensiver Forschung verbleiben offene Fragen auf diesem Gebiet, z.B. was ihr nicht-perturbatives Verhalten betrifft. Ein besseres Verständnis der Eichtheorien ist von grosser Wichtigkeit in der theoretischen Elementarteilchenphysik und ist das Ziel dieses Projektes.

Ein Weg zu einem besseren Verständnis von Eichtheorien ist die Einführung von Supersymmetrie. Supersymmetrie ist eine Symmetrie welche Bosonen und Fermionen verbindet. Obschon diese Symmetrie in der Natur nicht beobachtet wird, hat sie eine wichtige Funktion im Studium von Quantenfeldtheorien, da sie diese leichter lösbar macht. Im Zentrum dieses Projektes steht die Erforschung supersymmetrischer Eichtheorien mit gewissen Deformationen, welche einen Teil der Supersymmetrie brechen. Die deformierten Theorien stehen somit den realistischeren Eichtheorien ohne Supersymmetrie näher.

Dieses Projekt benutzt den Zugang über die zehn-dimensionale Stringtheorie, bzw. die elf-dimensionale M-Theorie zu den deformierten Eichtheorien. In der Stringtheorie können Eichtheorien via sogenannte Branen - ausgedehnte Objekte auf denen offenen Strings enden können - realisiert werden. Die Deformationen werden im zehn-dimensionalen Hintergrund realisiert, in welchen die Branen eingebettet werden. Dieser Ansatz zur Realisierung deformierter Eichtheorien ist neu und rein feldtheoretischen Methoden überlegen. Das Ziel des Projektes ist es, mithilfe der Stringtheorie ein neues, vereinheitlichtes Verständnis der deformierten supersymmetrischen Eichtheorien zu erlangen und das Repertoire der Methoden zum Studium ihrer nicht-perturbativen Eigenschaften zu erweitern.

Abstract

N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories have moved into the center of attention following the seminal paper of Seiberg and Witten in 1994 and have since seen many important advances. Recent years have seen a new surge of results in conjunction with integrable models.The fluxtrap background of string theory pioneered by the applicant provides a transparent and algorithmic way of constructing supersymmetric gauge theories with both mass and Omega-type deformations as are appearing the the gauge/Bethe and AGT correspondences. The proposed research will use the fluxtrap approach as a toolbox for the study of deformed supersymmetric gauge theories from a string theory perspective. Its final goal is to create a unified understanding of deformed supersymmetric gauge theories and their relation to integrability from string and M-theory. It moreover aims at a new route to gravity duals of deformed N=4 theories.
