Licht hat zu allen Zeiten des Pflanzenlebens einen starken Einfluss auf deren Wachstum und Entwicklung. Ein wichtiger Faktor des Sonnenlichts ist die potentiell schädigende Ultraviolett-B (UV-B) Strahlung. Pflanzen nutzten einen spezifischen Rezeptor zur Detektion von UV-B Strahlung und Regulation von UV-B Akklimatisierungsprozessen, welche zu erhöhter UV-B Toleranz führen. Trotz beträchtlichen Erfolgen in der Aufklärung der molekularen Mechanismen der UV-B Erkennung und Signalweiterleitung in den letzten Jahren, ist unser Verständnis noch fragmentarisch und auf wenige Komponenten limitiert. Das Zeil dieses Projektes ist ein besseres Verständnis des „UV-B Sehens“ und der anschliessender Signalweiterleitung in Pflanzen.

Abstract

Ultraviolet-B (UV-B) is a key environmental signal that is specifically perceived by plants and promotes UV acclimation and survival in sunlight. We have recently identified UV RESISTANCE LOCUS 8 (UVR8) as the long sought-after plant UV-B photoreceptor. Moreover, recent successes have significantly improved our understanding of the function of the UVR8-mediated UV-B signalling pathway. In particular, photomorphogenic UV-B signalling is initiated by the UV-B-dependent interaction of UVR8 with the E3 ubiquitin ligase CONSTITUTIVELY PHOTOMORPHOGENIC 1 (COP1). UVR8 and COP1 are both required for the UV-B-induced transcriptional activation of the ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5 (HY5) gene, which encodes a bZIP transcription factor that regulates target genes involved in photoregulatory UV-B responses, including those required for UV-B acclimation. REPRESSOR OF UV-B PHOTOMORPHOGENESIS 1 (RUP1) and RUP2 are important feed-back regulators facilitating UVR8 ground state reversion. Despite these successes, our understanding of the UVR8 signalling pathway is presently still limited to a small number of players, and even less is known regarding their interplay, regulations and mechanisms of action. Our major aim is a better understanding of UV-B perception and signalling in plants that leads to UV-B acclimation important to cope with sunlight.
