In der sogenannten Koordinationschemie lassen sich Eigenschaften von verschiedenen Reaktionspartnern in ein und demselben Produkt miteinander verbinden. Damit lassen sich neue Substanzen mit gewünschten Eigenschaften gezielt herstellen - beispielsweise eine Verbindung mit extrem guter antimikrobieller Wirksamkeit im Kampf gegen multiresistente Bakterien.

Die Arbeitsgruppe Fromm arbeitet auf dem Gebiet der Koordinationschemie, stellt also Verbindungen her, die durch Kombination von organischen Molekülen und Metallionen neue, gezielt erwünschte Eigenschaften besitzen.

Teil 1 des Projekts zielt auf eine energiesparende Synthese von oxidischen Materialien. Solche Verbindungen nutzen wir häufig im Alltag, ohne dass wir es merken. Zum Beispiel sind solche Oxide in den Elektroden von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien enthalten. Diese Oxide werden grosstechnisch durch langwierige Hochtemperatursynthesen hergestellt, die sehr energieaufwendig sind. Sie dauern mehrere Tage, müssen unter einem Sauerstoffstrom und bei Temperaturen von ca. 800°C und mehr durchgeführt werden. Wir wollen in unserem Projekt Substanzen herstellen, mit denen 1.) die Temperatur zur Oxidherstellung gesenkt, 2.) die Reaktionszeit verkürzt und 3.) auch kleine Partikel hergestellt werden können. Wir werden also mehrere Metallionen in einem bestimmten Mengenverhältnis durch einen organischen Liganden miteinander verknüpfen. Mildes Erhitzen an Luft führt dann zu den gewünschten Oxiden. Diese sollen bei diesen Reaktionsbedingungen auch kleinere Partikel bilden, was sich positiv auf ihre Eigenschaften, zum Beispiel in der Ionenleitfähigkeit, auswirkt. Des Weiteren können die hergestellten Koordinationsverbindungen auch selbst spannende Eigenschaften aufweisen, etwa bezogen auf den Magnetismus oder Porosität zur Speicherung von anderen Molekülen (Gasen oder Medikamenten).

Im 2. Teil des Projekts untersuchen wir gezielt Silberverbindungen. Diese sind antimikrobiell und können im Kampf gegen multiresistente Bakterien eingesetze werden. Gleichzeitig ist wenig über den Mechanismus dieser Eigenschaft bekannt: wie wirkt Silber in Bakterien, und wie wirkt es gegenüber unseren Zellen? Wieso ist Silber antibakteriell, tötet aber bei den gleichen Konzentrationen nicht auch unsere Zellen ab? Wir suchen Antworten auf diese Fragen in unserer Gruppe.

Abstract

The proposal is divided into two main parts. The first part deals with the synthesis and properties of mixed metal compounds, either as zero-dimensional aggregates (clusters) or as coordination polymers. For the former, we will investigate the cluster properties as well as their capability to yield ceramic nanomaterials upon combustion. For the coordination polymers, we will investigate properties as well as the design of porous coordination polymers based on new ligand classes. The second part of the proposal deals with the coordination chemistry of silver with peptides and tackles with the bioinorganic chemistry of silver, the formation of silver nanoparticles with light and the development of new soft matter materials (hydrogels and polymers) with antimicrobial properties.
