In den endlosen Weiten Sibiriens sind grosse Mengen Kohlenstoff im Boden gebunden. Was passiert damit, wenn die Erde sich weiter erwärmt und Permafrostgebiete auftauen? Wann und unter welchen Klima- und Umweltbedingungen sind die Böden entstanden? Obwohl wir z.B. aus Eisbohrkernen in der Antarktis wissen, dass das Quartär (die letzten ca. 2,6 Mio Jahre) durch die Abfolge von Eiszeiten und Warmzeiten geprägt war, wissen wir sehr wenig über die Klima- und Landschaftsgeschichte in Eurasien.

Ziele und Ergebnisse des Forschungsprojektes

Ziel des Forschungsprojektes ist es, moderne geochemische Methoden v.a. in Sibirien anzuwenden, um

  1. die Ausdehnung und den Zeitpunkt der vergangenen Vergletscherung im Altai, dem Sayan, und dem Baikalgebirge zu bestimmen (10Be Expositionsdatierung),
  2. Löss-Paleoböden noch besser als Archiv zur Rekonstruktion der Umweltbedingungen zu nutzen (Lipid-Biomarker und substanzspezifische Isotopenanalytik), und
  3. die Menge und das Alter der organischen Substanz in Böden zu untersuchen (14C Alterbestimmung).

Wissenschaftlicher und gesellschaftlicher Kontext

Die Klimaerwärmung führt v.a. in den auftauenden Permafrostgebieten zu einem verstärktem mikrobiellen Abbau der organischen Bodensubstanz und zur Emission der Treibhausgase CO2 und Methan. Dies könnte einen gefährlichen positiven Rückkopplungseffekt für die Klimaerwärmung darstellen. Ein Blick zurück in die geologische Vergangenheit hält womöglich die Antwort parat, unter welchen klimatischen Bedingungen wieviel Kohlenstoff in Böden gespeichert war. Helfen ausgedehnte Permafrostgebiete während der Eiszeiten vielleicht sogar, die niedrigen CO2 Konzentrationen in der Atmosphäre zu erklären?

Abstract

Recent estimates of the amount of organic carbon stored in permafrost regions have fueled concerns that a strong ‘permafrost carbon feedback’, i.e. a release of carbon dioxide and methane from thawing permafrost, could amplify the negative effects of man-made global warming. Little is known about the age of this carbon, and about the climate and landscape history in Siberia during the Quaternary in general. The proposed research program aims at (i) establishing glacial chronologies in the south Siberian mountains using surface exposure dating, (ii) applying biomarker analyses on loess-paleosol sequences, and (iii) quantifying and dating soil organic matter along 2 transects in Siberia.
