Abstract
Whereas the sections in the northern and western Jura, the Ultrahelvetic zone and the Briançonnais show a “classical” facies consisting of partly very fossiliferous, organic---rich mudstone, the sections in the southeastern Jura and the Helvetic zone are either highly reduced and condensed, or even missing. Until now, it is not clear which mechanism was responsible for this phenomenon, but emersion and current activity were likely implied. The latter needs to be reconciled with the presence of anoxia in a future model to be developed during this project. The facies in the southern Alps (“Rosso Ammonitico lombardo”) is very different and shows the importance of the Early Jurassic Piemont Ocean as a divide between differently oxygenated marine realms. The tools to be used are biostratigraphy (for dating and correlation purposes), facies and microfacies analysis (presence or absence of benthos, oxygenation levels in bottom waters and sediments), sedimentology (e.g., study of sedimentary condensation, influence of storm events and gravity---flow deposits), mineralogy (presence of phosphate, biosilica, kaolinite, etc.), carbon isotopes (carbon cycle, correlation), strontium isotopes (dating and correlation), phosphorus contents (trophic levels, anoxia), redox---sensitive trace elements (e.g., U, V, Mo, As), and organic---carbon contents (preservation and provenance of organic matter). OAE’s are the expression of episodes of extreme paleoenvironmental conditions, and occurred only sporadically through the Phanerozoic. They mostly result from some sort of combination of climate change, sea---level change, and changes in trophic levels, and were in many cases triggered by episodes of intense volcanism. A profound understanding of these events will improve our knowledge on the behavior and stability of the biosphere under extreme conditions, on the resulting feedback mechanisms, which help to stabilize the paleoenvironmental conditions to a more favorable level, and on the response time of the Earth’s system as a whole to environmental perturbations. This is also important since in spite of all differences, certain similarities are observed today, with the installation of dysaerobic conditions in basins nearby urbanized zones, increase in nutrient output into the oceans, and the loss of reefs and carbonate platforms.
