One goal of STALCLIM I was the improvement and/or establishment of new experimental methods to disentangle the climatic and environmental signals preserved in stalagmites from Switzerland, Turkey, Arabia and India. Since the official start of Sinergia STALCLIM in January 2011 significant progress has been made in the paleoclimatic interpretation of stalagmites from Switzerland, Turkey, Arabia and India (STALCLIM groups A, B). The in the same time developed state-off-the-art methods (STALCLIM groups C, D, E and F) to extract novel paleoclimate information from speleothems calcite can be now applied on stalagmites to develop long, continuous and near-instrumental records of precipitation and temperature for the Holocene and late Pleistocene. Such records are currently in high demand for benchmarking climate models that are also used for climate predictions. However, the development of these new and unique methods was intellectually challenging, hence time consuming and caused some unexpected delays. In order to achieve the main research objectives outlined in the original Sinergia proposal we request funding for one additional year. This extension would allow us to construct comprehensive multi-proxy stalagmite-based climate records which match those obtained from ice cores and lake sediments. Furthermore, it would also allow PhD-students to complete their thesis and postdocs to publish additional articles in highly-ranked international journals.
