Einige der wichtigsten wissenschaftlichen Fragen, denen das CMS Experiment am LHC des CERN nachgeht, ist die genauere experimentelle Charakterisierung des im Jahre 2012 gefundenden Higgsbosons sowie die Suche nach Physik jenseits des Standardmodells. Dieses Gesuch widmet sich diesen Fragen in drei Datenanalyse-Ansätzen. Weiterhin unterstützt dieses Gesuch den Upgrade einer Komponente des CMS Detektors, die im Jahre 2016 eingebaut werden wird.
Lay summary
Im Jahre 2012 haben die beiden grossen Experimente des Large Hadron Colliders (LHC) am europäischen Teilchenphysikforschungszentrums CERN das Higgsboson entdeckt. Eine wichtige Komponente dieses Gesuchs ist die genaue Bestimmung seiner Eigenschaften mittels des Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Experiments. Abweichungen von Eigenschaften des gefundenen Teilchens von denen im Standardmodell vorausgesagten würden einen indirekten Hinweis auf Physik jenseits des Standardmodells liefern. Eine weitere Komponente dieses Gesuchs ist die Suche nach einer direkten Manifestation neuer Physik in Form der Erzeugung supersymmetrischer Teilchen, die markante Zerfallsignaturen im Detektor hinterlassen. Eine von Forschern der ETH entwickelte Methode benutzt zum Nachweis der Supersymmetrie (SUSY) Leptonen unterschiedlicher Ladung, die zusammen mit einem Z-Boson erzeugt werden. Eine weitere Methode macht sich den Endzustand mit Leptonen gleicher Ladung zunutze, eine Signatur, die im Standardmodell nur selten vorkommt. Ein solcher seltener Standardmodell-Prozess ist die Produktion eines Top-Anti-Topquark-Paares zusammen mit einem Z- oder W-Boson. Dieser Prozess ist bisher noch nicht beobachtet worden, erste Anzeichen wurden im 7 TeV Datensatz des CMS Experimentes aber bereits gesehen. Dieser Prozess stellt einen wichtigen Untergrund zu den Suchen nach SUSY dar und ermöglicht stringente Tests des Standardmodells. Die Messung dieses Prozesses im 8 TeV Datensatz ist ein wichtiger dritter Bestandteil dieses Gesuches. Weiterhin unterstützt dieses Gesuch die Arbeit von ETH Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler am Upgrade des  CMS Barrel-Pixel-Detektors für die "Phase 1" Ausbauphase des LHC. Das abgedeckte Aufgabengebiet umfasst den Test des neuen Auslesechips (ROC) und Tests des Moduldesigns. Diese Arbeit wird in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Mitarbeitern des Paul-Scherrer-Instituts und der Unversität Zürich durchgeführt.

### Abstract

This request proposes research to be conducted with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment operating at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Center for Particle Physics (CERN). This proposal attacks fundamental questions of experimental particle physics in a three-fold manner. We will attempt to firmly establish the existence of the Higgs boson decaying into two b-quarks using the production mode in association with a vector boson (W or Z). This process allows the extraction of the couplings of the Higgs boson to b-quarks and W or Z-bosons as well as a determination of the spin and parity of the newly found particle. We continue the search for SUSY using the dilepton final state, employing a kinematic method (Jet-Z-balancing) for leptons of opposite charge sign to estimate SM backgrounds from data. The search for SUSY in the like-sign dilepton final state is not only sensitive to the production of SUSY particles via the strong force, but with a suitable optimization is also sensitive to electroweak SUSY production, a channel which becomes important if the mass hierarchy for SUSY squarks and gluinos is beyond the energy reach of the present LHC running at 8 TeV center of mass (CM) energy. A SM background for the dilepton SUSY searches previously not measured is the production of a top-anti-top quark pair in association with a vector boson (W or Z). Scientists of thisproposal have made a successful first measurement of this process at a LHC CM energy of 7 TeV and we propose to improve this measurement using the 8 TeV data set. Our proposal further requests support to continue hardware work for the upgrades of one of the key components of the CMS detector, the barrel pixel detector (BPIX), foreseen for the year 2016 (phase 1) and around 2021 (phase 2). The barrel pixel detector is a key component for b-jet identification needed in the physics program described above. These upgrades are necessitated by the ever increasing improvements and planned upgrades of the LHC. Recently, the CMS phase 1 upgrade program presented in a CMS Technical Design Report wasfavorably evaluated by the Large Hadron Collider Committee (LHCC). Within CMS several consortia have formed to collaborate on the phase 1 upgrade, with ETH Z¨urich, PSI and University of Zurich building the Swiss consortium. The role of the ETH Zurich group within the Swiss consortium will be the important task of module testing.
