La dynamique des échanges gazeux entre l’océan et l’atmosphère constitue un paramètre fondamental contrôlant l’évolution climatique. Depuis la révolution industrielle, les océans ont absorbé un bon tiers des émissions anthropiques de CO2 ralentissant ainsi le rythme du réchauffement climatique. Des observations récentes montrent toutefois une réduction de leur capacité naturelle à piéger le CO2, notamment dans l’Océan Austral, en réponse à l’élévation des températures.

La visée de ce projet est donc d’étudier les processus fondamentaux qui régissent l’évolution du cycle du carbone marin, afin de mieux comprendre son rôle dans l’évolution de la concentration atmosphérique de CO2. La période envisagée, qui va de la transition du dernier âge glaciaire jusqu’à nos jours, est caractérisée par une augmentation des températures à la surface des océans d’environ 2°C. Cette amplitude est similaire au réchauffement prévu d’ici la fin du siècle, mais sur une période de 10’000 ans. Plus spécifiquement, le projet s’attèlera à reconstruire les interactions entre le climat et le cycle du carbone océanique par l’analyse d’éléments contenus dans les sédiments marins extraits des fonds abyssaux de l’Océan Austral. Le projet se concentrera notamment sur la reconstruction de la fertilité biologique marine comme marqueur permettant d’approximer les échanges d’éléments nutritifs et de carbone entre l’océan de profondeur et la surface. 

Ce projet de recherche fournira de nouvelles connaissances sur la dynamique des échanges gazeux dans l’Océan Austral, qui nous donneront une vision plus précise de la capacité des océans à piéger le carbone. Ces résultats pourraient avoir des implications importantes sur notre capacité à prédire l’évolution du climat à long terme, dans un contexte de perturbations anthropiques.

Abstract

This proposal focuses on investigating the interactions between climate and marine biogeochemistry, as mediated by the global scale ocean circulation, gleaned from the testimony of paleoceanographic records. The central objective is to develop a deeper insight into the fundamental drivers of the rate at which the Antarctic circumpolar ocean contributes to the partitioning of carbon, nutrients and oxygen between the ocean interior and the productive surface ocean. Paleoceanographic records extend beyond the noise of recent decadal oscillations, to provide an independent perspective on the links between climate and ocean dynamics.
