The overall goal of this proposal is to study the role of spin-orbit interaction on the electronic structure of novel materials, with a specific focus on Rashba systems, topological insulators, and correlated systemsThe first aim of this project is to study the spin structure of various bulk and thin film topological insulators in contact with magnetic and superconducting materials by spin- and angle-resolved photoemission (SARPES). These measurements will be complemented by ab-initio calculations and STM and AFM measurements. Furthermore, different crystal faces of topological insulators and Rashba and topological systems involving unfilled d-states will be studied. The second goal is to study the influence of spin-orbit interaction in correlated systems through spin-dependent matrix element effects. Furthermore, different types of quasiparticle interactions are expected have a different spin structure of the self energy, which enters directly into the spectral function and can thus be detected through their typical fingerprint in the SARPES data.
