This funding proposal seeks strategic support by the SNF in order to carry out a world-class research programme in the context of the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva. The first very successful collection and analysis of proton-proton collisions in 2010 have shown that CMS in general, and the ETH group within CMS in particular, have taken important roles in this unique quest for Physics beyond the Standard Model. The overarching aim of the CMS groups of ETH Zurich, led by Prof. G. Dissertori, Prof. C. Grab, Prof. F. Pauss and Prof. R. Wallny is to maintain and consolidate the leadership role of the ETH group within CMS on a level commensurate with the important investments made by the Swiss funding agencies into the CMS experiment (Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECAL), Barrel Pixel Detector, Solenoid Magnet, Silicon Strip Tracker). This proposal, under the leadership of the PI G. Dissertori, specifically requests funds to exploit the potential of CMS centred on the ECAL and to continue a modest calorimeter R&D program for future ECAL upgrades. In particular, the proposal presents a streamlined physics analysis program with a clear emphasis on searches for supersymmetric particles and for the Higgs boson. A salient feature of this proposal is a new search initiative in the Higgs di-photon channel, under the leadership of a newly joining senior scientist, Dr. M. Donega (Co-PI), who fills a tenure track position created with the arrival of Prof. Wallny at ETH.This funding proposal is driven by the new LHC schedule for the years 2011 and 2012, which foresees running the LHC in 2011, at 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy, with a possible integrated luminosity of 2-3 fb-1. Then, in 2012, the run will be continued at high instantaneous luminosities, which should at least double the 2011 data sample. Such a large overall data sample opens extremely promising prospects for the discovery of new physics, before the long shutdown planned in 2013. The period of this funding proposal coincides in a most excellent manner with the high-statistics data taking and analyses periods in 2011 and 2012, with finalizing physics publications up to the summer conferences in 2013. Furthermore, the shutdown in 2013 will be essential to maintain and upgrade existing hard- and software infrastructure for the ECAL detector control system. Finally, during the funding period of this proposal we will study possible options for later upgrades of the CMS forward calorimetry, expected to happen around the year 2020 or slightly later.The planned research efforts are in excellent synergy, complementarity and close coordination with the other CMS efforts at ETH (groups of R. Wallny and C. Grab), which focus on the optimal Physics exploitation of the CMS Pixel detector and on its upgrades. Close ties also exist to other Swiss CMS groups at PSI and the University of Zurich. The analysis efforts of the PI and the Co-PIs follow a common analysis master plan, sharing the overall responsibilities in order to increase efficiency and exploit synergies between the different groups. It is very important to highlight that the CMS data analysis environment is extremely competitive, with notably very strong and large groups from the US, the UK and Germany, such as MIT, UCSB, UCSD, Fermilab, Imperial College and KIT, to mention a few. Given the experience gained over the last years, we will have the necessary know-how to compete with such groups and thus make visible impacts, provided strong support is given by the SNF in terms of funding for Postdocs and PhD students, thus complementing our own investments such as the person-power for operating the detector.
