Lay summary
The Near Surface Geophysics 2010 conference of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) was held in Zurich, September 6-8. Prof. Alan Green (ETH) was the Chairman of the Local Advisory Committee and Prof. Klaus Holliger (University of Lausanne) was the Chairman of the Scientific Committee. Prof. Niklas Linde (University of Lausanne) organised a full day workshop (50 participants) entitled "Hydrogeophysics" on September 5. The conference (273 participants) included 81 oral and 72 poster presentations. Topics included: (1) hydrogeophysics, (2) nuclear waste disposal, (3) airborne and remote sensing, (4) archaeological and geotechnical investigations, (5) high resolution seismic studies, (6) investigations of landfills, urban areas and industrial sites, (7) permafrost and glaciers, (8) karsts and cavities, (9) soft sediments and (10) novel techniques. Keynote talks were given on (A) "Radioactive waste disposal: a key societal challenge facing earth scientists", (B) Full-waveform inversion of seismic data and (C) "The role of reflection seismic surveys in locating the Swedish high-level radioactive waste repository".

Abstract

Professors at ETH Zurich and the University of Lausanne are the principal organisers of the 2010 Near Surface Geophysics Conference, associated Hydrogeophysics Workshop, and 2 accompanying 1-day geological/geophysical field excursions. The various events will be held September 5-9 in Zurich and nearby parts of Switzerland. The Near Surface Geophysics Conference is Europe's premier yearly conference for environmental and engineering geophysics. It is run under the auspices of the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE; membership about 14000). The organisers of the conference in Switzerland are actively seeking sponsorship to cover a wide variety of costs. They expect to raise as much as CHF22000 and help-in-kind from various private and public agencies, and seek CHF28000 from the SNF to help cover the costs of 8 invited keynote speakers (2 for the conference and 6 for the workshop) and 10 student travel grants.
