Coordination Polymers are currently objects of vast research. For example, these compound can be porous and used to absorb exhaust gases, to store hydrogen, or to perform catalytic reactions inside of pores. In our group, we have investigated porous coordination polymers for their optical properties as a function of guest molecules inside of the pores. We now want to see if flexible ligands used in this context may lead to liquid crystalline behavior. Also, ligands providing specific pores are in our focus of research for building polymer scaffolds. This could be of interest in the field of ion batteries in which a mobile phase is required within a solid scaffold. Further applications are found in self-healing paints or microelectronics. In terms of cluster compounds, we are interested in the molecular magnetism applications. Thus, we have found a new access to metal cluster compounds with paramagnetic metal ions. Some of these aggregates can be used also as precursors for mixed metal oxide materials as they are for instance used in superconductors or ferroelectrica. Finally, we are interested in the biomedical applications of coordination polymers and clusters. Specifically, we investigate silver compounds for their antimicrobial properties.

Abstract

Being a continuation of previous projects, this research proposal deals again with at first sight very different areas evolving from the areas, in which we have made progress over the past years. In the first part of the proposal, we wish to close the current gap which exists between crystalline coordination polymer networks requiring relatively short and rigid ligands, and polymers with their corresponding properties. This will lead e. g. to liquid crystals and/or hybrid mtaerials. The next part of the proposal deals with the synthesis, characterization and analysis of porous compounds for the selective absorption of guest molecules. Metal clusters will be made to serve as nodes in coordination polymers, as well as for catalysis. Finally, we will continue our work on single source precursors.
