Ziel des Projekts:Im Projekt soll die räumliche Verteilung des Radionuklidinventars in einem festen Spallationstarget der SINQ-Anlage des PSI bestimmt werden. Das Targetmaterial ist reines Blei. Sowohl sicherheitstechnisch relevante Radionuklide als auch solche, die ein hohes technisches und wissenschaftliches Anwendungspotential haben, stehen im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchungen.Kontext und Bedeutung:Die Kenntnis der Radionuklidinventars und seiner Verteilung ist von essentieller Bedeutung für das Design und den Bau neuer wissenschaftlicher Grossforschungsanlagen wie zum Beispiel der in Schweden geplanten neuen Europäischen Spallationsneutronenquelle (ESSS). Ausserdem können seltene Radionuklide gewonnen werden, die in verschiedenen Wissensgebieten wie z.B. der nuklearen Astrophysik dringend gebraucht werden.Wissenschaftlicher Rahmen und Methodologie:Das zu untersuchende Target besteht aus einzelnen, mit Blei gefüllten Röhrchen. Nach der Entnahme werden die Proben aufgelöst, die Radionuklide in Einzeltrennungen isoliert und mit entsprechenden Messinstrumenten (alpha- und gamma-Spektrometer, Liquid-Scintillation Counting) quantitativ bestimmt. Die gefundenen Verteilungen werden mit entsprechenden theoretischen Vorhersagen verglichen.

Abstract

The proposed work is aimed to carry out a radiochemical analysis of the radionuclide inventory of an irradiated lead target from the SINQ facility at PSI. Special attention will be paid to the safety-relevant alpha-emitting isotopes as well as radionuclides with a very long half-live. The results will contribute to the evaluation of a safe operation, accident scenario, decommissioning and disposal of high-power target material suitable for the design of a future European Spallation neutron Source (ESS). A high impact on the development of nuclear data bases and improvement of calculation codes for theoretical predictions of the residue nuclide production has to be expected. Moreover, the analytics of this target will help to select the suitable material for the separation of exotic isotopes to be applied in several fields of scientific research like nuclear astrophysics, basic nuclear physics or radiopharmaceutical chemistry.
