Lay summary
The international Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) project is a dedicated array of Cherenkov Telescopes for the exploration of the high energy gamma-ray sky, between 100 GeV and 100 TeV, with unprecedented sensitivities.During the R&D phase, the group at EPFL intends to contribute to the project with the construction of a camera prototype for the high energy component of the array (a subarray of 30-50 small telescopes with a large field of view).Early achievements will help to secure the influence of the group in decisional process concerning hardware and therefore ensure well justified decisions for the production phase.The work toward the detailed design of an array of Cherenkov telescopes for gamma-ray astronomy above a few TeV is initiated, eventually providing a set of basic requirements for the high energy telescope and its camera (size of the primary mirror, field of view, camera pixel size, trigger/data acquisition board capabilities, pixel technology). Pixel technologies with high photon detection efficiencies are under scrutiny. DAQ (in particular using the DRS4 chip) is under investigation.Within 12-18 months, a first complete prototype camera layout will be available and, depending on additional funding, equipped.

The aim of this proposal is to ensure our groups at EPFL and ISDC an optimal utilization of the human resources, to concretize our involvement in the early development phase of the CTA array, to secure our influence in decisional processes concerning hardware and to firmly establish the ISDC Switzerland as a vital hub of communication for astronomical data. We would like to lead the effort in the establishment of the CTA Data Center and to participate in the detailed evaluation of hardware design studies of the CTA collaboration, contributing to well justified decisions on the final design of the CTA system in a few of years from now.
