One of the most challenging goals in laser physics and photonics is the realization of a microscope delivering powerful coherent x-ray radiation in the so-called water window between the K-absorption edges of carbon (284eV) and oxygen (543 eV). The most promising approach for generating ultrafast coherent x-ray pulses down to a few nm wavelength and within extreme short pulse durations (i.e. femtoseconds or attoseconds) is based on high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in a noble gas by a table-top laser system. However, instead of conventional Ti:sapphire laser systems emitting at 0.8 µm we propose to study an alternative approach to extend the maximum photon energy to 500 eV by developing a powerful femtosecond laser emitting at mid-infrared wavelength. At longer laser wavelengths the maximum photon energy of HHG is significantly enhanced due to the higher ponderomotive energy the electrons gain due to the longer laser field period. Powerful coherent x-ray pulses in the water window are going to open the door for coherent imaging techniques such as holography/tomography at this wavelength range. A coherent, table-top soft x-ray source emitting at a few nm is also an urgent need for seeding the future hard x-ray free electron laser (FEL) being developed at PSI. Only seeding allows the FEL to emit temporally coherent hard x-ray pulses.
