Lay summary
The LHCb experiment is designed for precise measurements of CP violation and rare B decays, exploiting the very large bb production cross section at the LHC collider at CERN. LHCb's main physics aims are to elucidate the flavour structure in the quark sector, and hopefully observe signals from New Physics.

Our research group has worked on LHCb since the beginning of the project in 1995, playing important roles in the leadership of the experiment. We have fulfilled our construction responsibilities, which included the development, construction and commissioning of the common readout board TELL1, of electronics and transmission lines for the silicon vertex detector VELO, of the silicon Inner Tracker detector, as well as a contribution to the DAQ and high-level trigger hardware.

The LHCb detector is now fully constructed and installed. It has already recorded first low-energy LHC collisions at the end of 2009. The commissioning, calibration and alignment of the detector are well underway and will be completed before the 2010 physics run. The physics program will be deployed after the LHC reaches a center-of-mass energy in excess of 4 TeV and a luminosity of the order of 10^32 cm^-2 s^-1.

During the period covered by this grant (3 years from March 1, 2010), we plan to reach quickly a stable physics operation regime. Our main objectives are the smooth operation and maintenance of the hardware components under our responsibility, the participation in general collaboration tasks such as physics data taking, and, last but not least, data analysis in view of the publication of physics results. This ProDoc training module entitled "Particle physics in the LHC era" provides funds to support two PhD students who will work on the following physics topics, using the LHCb data collected in the years 2010 and 2011:
1) measurement of the CP-violating phase in B0s -> J/psi phi decays;
2) search for new b baryons and measurement of their masses, lifetimes and production rates.

### Abstract

The LHCb experiment is designed for precise measurements of CP violation and rare B decays, exploiting the very large bb production cross section at the LHC collider at CERN. LHCb's main physics aims are to elucidate the flavour structure in the quark sector, and hopefully observe signals from New Physics.The LHCb detector is now fully constructed and installed. It is ready to record LHC's first collisions, expected in fall 2009. The commissioning, calibration and alignment of the detector are well underway and will be completed soon after the first collisions are delivered. The physics program will be deployed after the LHC reaches a center-of-mass energy in excess of 4 TeV and a luminosity of the order of 10^32 cm^-2 s^-1. Our research group has worked on LHCb since the beginning of the project in 1995, playing important roles in the leadership of the experiment. We have fulfilled our construction responsibilities, which included the development, construction and commissioning of the common readout board TELL1, of electronics and transmission lines for the silicon vertex detector VELO, of the silicon Inner Tracker detector, as well as a contribution to the DAQ and high-level trigger hardware. In addition, we have participated in the development of trigger algorithms and general software, in the optimization of physics performance, and in the preparation for physics analysis. During the period covered by this request we plan to reach a stable physics operation regime. Our main objectives are the smooth operation and maintenance of the hardware components under our responsibility, the participation in general collaboration tasks such as physics data taking, and, last but not least, data analysis in view of the publication of physics results. Within the ProDoc training module entitled "Particle physics in the LHC era", we request funds to support two PhD students who will work on the following physics topics, using the LHCb data collected in the years 2010 and 2011:1) measurement of the CP-violating phase in B0s -> J/psi phi decays;2) search for new b baryons and measurement of their masses, lifetimes and production rates. The PhD students will be selected according to the procedures outlined in the proposal of the ProDoc training module, enrolled in the physics program of EPFL's doctoral school, and participate in the activities organized within the ProDoc training module. They will work in close contact with the post-docs hired through the ongoing SUK/CUS project C-15 entitled "Swiss centre for advanced studies in particle physics in the LHC era".
