Second European Conference for Clinical Nanomedicine Prof. Dr. med. Patrick Hunziker, University Hospital Basel, (Disposal 32CO30-125653 / 1) The 2nd European Conference for Clinical Nanomedicine 2009 had the aim to bring together a pan-European team of speakers and audience The 2009 conference welcomed in Basel 276 participants from 33 countries. 51% of the participants were clinicians that debated on a highly interdisciplinary level with nanoscientists with background in pharmacology, biology, physics, chemistry and engineering. Further industrial experts in the field of life sciences and materials researchers and policy makers were present. The Conference put emphasis on the successful collaboration between clinical physicians and academic Nanomedicine researchers willing to bring their research to clinical application. - All speakers with the exception of the keynote lecturers, (among them 3 Nobel prize laureates and the most experiences TDD- experts) brought their interventions to the point within 10 minutes. After each block of Statements there was between 30 and 60 minutes time for debating in depth. The setting of the programme was basing on the 4 steps: 1. Which unsolved clinical problems are waiting for nanomedical solutions? 2. What nanoscience technologies are available to solve these medical problems? 3. What is the state of the state of the art in late breaking and ongoing trials in Nanomedicine in 2009? 4. What are the grand challenges of Nanomedicine in the near future? Half a day of the conference was dedicated to parallel workshops enabling an in depth discussion to the following topics: a) Neurology, Oncology, Inflammation b) Orthopaedics/Implants/Tissue c) Polymer based Nanoparticles/Vesicles d) Hard Nanoparticles e) Imaging f) Toxicology/Safety/Regulatory Processes g) Orphan Disease, Vaccines, Developing Countries h) Ethics and Philosophy. The fields of discussion were Cardiology, Oncology, Neurosurgery, Inflammatory and Infectious diseases, Ear disease and Eye disease. The European Society for Nanomedicine (esnam) and the American Society for Nanomedicine(ASNM) have chosen the 2nd CLINAM Conference as the venue for the inauguration meeting of the new International Society for Nanomedicine (ISNM). The secretariat shall be for the first 3 years in Seitzerland. The next conference goes for more than 300 delegates and seeks to organise a Foyer Exhibition including also a "university village". It will be held from May 9-12, 2010 in Basel.
