Lay summary
The Tethys belt is a very prolific metallogenic belt, in which economic gold, copper and polymetallic deposits were produced during different and successive Late Cretaceous and Tertiary tectono-magmatic events. The research project addresses the ambiguities about paradoxical ore deposit relationships along the Tethys belt and the characterization of epithermal deposits in different tectonic settings dominated either by porphyry-copper or volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits. Three different locations were selected along the Tethys belt for the current project: (1) the Late Cretaceous, Serbo-Bulgarian Timok-Srednogorie belt; (2) the Tertiary Eastern Rhodopes in northeastern Greece; and (3) the Lesser Caucasus in Georgia and Armenia. The Serbo-Bulgarian Timok-Srednogorie belt is characterized by a high abundance of porphyry-copper and high-sulphidation epithermal deposits with good ore grades, but usually relatively small in size. Compared to other tectonic settings (e.g. South American Andes), no giant high-sulphidation epithermal deposits occur along the Tethys belt. One sub-project of this contribution will investigate genetic aspects of high-sulphidation deposits in this belt, the characterization of which remains an outstanding metallogenic problem. In the Tertiary Eastern Rhodopes, one outstanding question, which remains open to debate, is to understand how southern Greek porphyry-epithermal systems, mostly enriched in gold and copper, are related to northern lead-zinc deposits of the Bulgarian Rhodopes. The spatial ore deposit association of the Greek Eastern Rhodopes also provides an adequate field to investigate controversies about the porphyry-copper to epithermal transition. The Lesser Caucasus of Georgia and Armenia is a segment of the Tethys metallogenic belt with poorly documented and genetically poorly constrained ore deposits, where equivocal porphyry-copper and volcanogenic massive sulphide interpretations have been proposed. Both the regional geological framework and the ore deposit features of the Lesser Caucasus will be investigated in detail. The multidisciplinary approach includes field investigation, extensive surface, underground and drillcore sampling, transparent and reflected light microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, microprobe studies, whole rock major and trace element geochemistry, radiogenic and stable isotope investigations, fluid inclusion microthermometry, and radiometric dating. This project will improve our knowledge about the Cretaceous and Tertiary metallogeny and geodynamic evolution along the Tethys belt. It will clarify ambiguities about paradoxical ore deposit relationships, and allow us to reconcile ore deposit types with given geodynamic settings. This project will be of great value to mining companies, and governmental agencies to improve exploration programs for finding new natural resources and improve strategies for extending reserves in presently producing mines throughout the Tethys belt.
