Lay summary
The present research investigates the personal and professional impact of a client suicide on caregivers and social workers working with people at risk both in an institutional or a private setting and aims at identifying resources and strategies for dealing with such an event. The research is structured in two parts:The first part addresses the professionals working with populations at risk within institutions. This part of study is conducted in two phases. In the first one, a questionnaire will be sent to all social and medical institutions working with persons at risk in the canton of Geneva in order to identify those who had experienced a client suicide during the five years preceding the survey. In the second phase, a self-administered anonymous questionnaire will be sent to institutions in order to be filled by professionals (doctors/psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, social educators, psychologists and nursing assistant) liable to have experienced such an event. This questionnaire, based on several reliable and validated scales largely discussed in the recent literature, is designed to investigate the emotional and professional impact of patient suicide, as well as the resources used to cope with this event. The second part of the study addresses the professionals working in private setting in the cantons of Fribourg, Geneva, Jura, Neuchâtel, Valais and Vaud, and members of vocational societies. All professionals (doctors/psychiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists) will be asked to fill the main self-administered questionnaire (adapted to the context, the realities and the practices of private settings).
