Lay summary
This project supports the participation of Swiss scientists in activities related to Swiss membership in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) through the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD). Switzerland is a partner in ECORD, which comprises 16 European countries, plus Canada, through a grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF). IODP is a multiple platform program with ECORD providing access to mission-specific drilling platforms (MSPs) while Japan and U.S.A. provide riser and riser-less drilling vessels, respectively. Three major research themes were identified in the IODP Initial Science Plan (2003-2013): (1) The deep biosphere and the sub-seafloor ocean, (2) Environmental change, processes and effects and (3) Solid earth cycles and geodynamics. Specific initiatives have been outlined under each of these themes and serve as the major focus of IODP (http://www.iodp.org/isp/). Swiss activities in IODP/ECORD include shipboard and shore-based involvement in drilling expeditions and pre- and post-cruise meetings, as well as Swiss membership in IODP/ECORD science advisory panels and organization and attendance in IODP/ECORD related workshops and summer schools.
