Lay summary
"Iconography of Deities and Demons in the Ancient Near East" (IDD) is designed as a companion to the "Dictionary of Deities and Demons in the Bible", a standard reference for Near Eastern religious history edited by B. Becking, P. van der Horst and K. van der Toorn (1996, 2nd ed. 1999). The project will result in a reference work based on the archaeological, iconographic, and religio-historical analysis of visual sources of the second and first millennia BCE depicting deities and demons. Visual sources to be considered range from monumental public art to minor and travelled objects such as seals and amulets, often pertaining to more personal piety. The geographical scope extends from Egypt to Iran, and from Greece to Arabia, with a particular focus on the Levant. The project is presently designed to include c. 230 entries, to be authored by c. 70 expert scholars from 13 countries. An international team of advisors will provide introductory essays discussing the specific rules which govern the visual representation of the divine and the demonic in various parts of the ancient world.
