Lay summary
The construction of nucleic acid like structures with novel types of polyaromatic building blocks is pursued. Synthetic efforts will concentrate on the development of suitable pyrene derivatives for incoporation into oligodeoxynucleotides. Structural, spectroscopic and electronic properties of the obtained oligomers are investigated. DNA-like oligomers containing such types of building blocks give rise to hybrids with novel structural and functional properties. Hybridisation of the modified oligomers will result in the formation of duplex, triplex and quadruplex structures with biomimetic properties. Since the polyaromatic building blocks generally possess interesting spectroscopic properties, such as monomer or excimer fluorescence, the may also find application in the fields of diagnostics and material research.
