Lay summary
Although it is widely recognised that fold-thrust belts are intimately linked to foreland basins, relatively few studies have focused on the coupled interactions that exist between them. In this project, we will focus on one aspect of this coupling that remains particularly poorly understood: how the rheology of fold-thrust belts influences the nature and development of foreland basins. We will compare and contrast all aspects of the foreland basins developing above and in front of dominantly-frictional versus dominantly-viscous decollements in the Zagros orogen. In order to carry out this investigation we will use a multidisciplinary approach including detailed field observations of the foreland basins and their deposits, an age-exhumation-provenance analysis of foreland basin sediments based on biostratigraphy, palynofacies, detrital low temperature thermochrology (zircon/apatite fission track) and detrital U-Pb age dating, combined with analysis of DEM's and available seismic sections and bore hole data. Together these methods will enable us to reconstruct the time-space evolution of the foreland basins and to identify how the rheology of the orogenic wedge influences and interacts with foreland basin development.
