Lay summary
In this project we develop new simulation algorithms for quantum systems and use them to investigate the unusual properties of exotic quantum states and phase transitions between them. As one prominent example I want to highlight the "supersolid" phase, which is a conjectured unusual quantum state that is at the same time solid and superfluid (a frictionless liquid). While the phases "solid" and "liquid" seem to be exclusive, a quantum system can potentially be both at the same time and form a supersolid. Using computer simulations we can investigate whether, for example, solid Helium forms such a supersolid state, or look for other systems in which a supersolid could appear. Other exotic phases we will investigate are deconfined quantum phase transitions, and exotic phases with anyonic excitations.
