Lay summary
LHCb is an experiment designed for precise measurements of CP violation and rare B decays at the LHC collider at CERN. Its physics aims are to elucidate the flavour structure in the quark sector, and hopefully observe signals from New Physics.
LHCb is expected to be ready to take data at its full potential from the start of LHC operation, in 2007. The high-energy physics group in Lausanne, LPHE, has participated in LHCb from the beginning of the project in 1995. A group from the University of Zurich has joined the LHCb collaboration in 1999.
Members of LPHE play important roles in the leadership of the LHCb experiment. Our main responsibilities and activities are:
- Development, construction, and commissioning of the readout boards "TELL1" and of the electronics for LHCb's silicon vertex detector "VELO".
- Development, construction, and commissioning of the silicon "Inner Tracker" detector, in collaboration with other institutes (in particular the University of Zurich) involved in LHCb's Silicon Tracker project.
Timed by the requirement to have the LHCb detector ready for data taking in mid-2007, our objectives for the forthcoming period are:
- Participation in the construction and beam tests of one quarter of the VELO starting in the first half of 2006, implying the production of 30 TELL1 and associated analogue interfaces, and the finalization of the first version of the TELL1 firmware.
- Production of the remaining 320 TELL1 and VELO electronics boards by end of June 2006.
- Production and testing of all the Inner Tracker modules, detector boxes, and support frames; installation and commissioning of the Inner Tracker system.
- Cumulated investment of 1.9 MCHF in the LHCb detector construction, including specific contributions to the VELO project, the Silicon Tracker project, the DAQ and online computing, as well as general contributions to common LHCb projects.
