Useful science, nature appropriation and politics. The Economic Society of Berne in the European context (1750-1850)
The century between 1750 and 1850 was crucial for the special European-Atlantic approach to the Early Modern period. Abilities of future industrial nations to give impulses to processes of long-term economic growth resulted through the accomplishments of meeting social, cultural and economic challenges during this so-called “saddle time.” The immediate bonds fostered between the sciences and politics and economics were important factors in the course of this period. It was the economic-patriotic societies founded throughout Europe during the latter half of the 18th century which served as the institutional vessels for the production of “useful knowledge” in terms of economic and societal reforms. The Economic Society of Berne, founded in 1759, was one of the precursors among these institutions.
The project aims at a communication- and practice-oriented investigation of the Society in consideration of three perspectives: (1) functioning and institutional organization, (2) international integration into the European communications network, and (3) implementation of new perceptions in politics and administrative practice.
