Supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Project “The Biological Standard of Living in Switzerland 1800-1940” started in October2005 at the Department of Economic, Social and Environmental History at the University of Berne, Switzerland. The project attempts to show up changes in the biological standard of living of woman and men since the early 19th Century by a sample of human heights. Data Sources are registers of passports, controls of prisoners and control lists of the recruitment. The expected results will be outstanding: For the first time, it is possible to shape out long termed developments in the biological standard of living in Switzerland, differentiated by sex, social background and spatial origin. Special focus will be laid on the biological standard of living of workers in the big swiss cities, especially during WWI and WWII, on the biological standard of living of woman, on the development of the BMI during short time periods (when weight data is available) and on different environmental factors who could have influenced human growth at different age.
