Lay summary
The Volcanic Studies Group at the University of Geneva is engaged in a long term effort to quantify the processes involved in magma genesis and evolution in continental volcanic arcs, with an emphasis on the Quaternary Southern Volcanic Zone of the Andes. In pursuit of this goal we are continuing a comprehensive study of the Tatara-San Pedro complex (36E S) that was begun in 1984, and are close to finishing an investigation of Nevada de Longaví a nearby (36.2E S) but very different volcanic center. In addition, we are synthesizing available data from volcanic centers along the arc between 33 and 41E S, and are attempting to relate regional geochemical patterns to the composition of the arc crust by sampling Tertiary batholiths in the region 35-38E S. These efforts have aided us in distinguishing between mantle and crustal contributions to arc magmas.
