Lay summary
The initial aim of this project was to describe in a comparative way the emergence of a set of local scientific communities (especially in Geneva, Göttingen and St-Petersburg) in the broader field of 18th century science. But this aspect being itself an essential component of the emergence of a modern scientific field, our research has evolved to a more general analysis of the constitution of what has sometimes been called the “Republic of Science” in the golden age of academies (1700-1830). Our first objective is therefore the constitution of a large database encompassing all the sociological and relational datas about some 6.000 actors of that process of establishment of modern science. The ultimate goal of the study is to describe in a synthetic and a figured out manner the social status of scientists in that crucial period, their corporate identity, the process of specialization, as well as the nature and the working of the various types of networks relating searchers. The case studies of some local communities of scholars remain as a way to complete the sociological investigation of the emerging scientific field, focussing on some specific dimensions like the place of institutions, the part of amateurs and of “civil society” in the making of modern science. It also facilitates the characterization of the various kinds of short-range networks like patronage and family networks, or social ties between colleagues.
