"Iconography of Deities and Demons in the Biblical World" (IDD) isdesigned as a companion to the "Dictionary of Deities and Demons in theBible", a standard reference for Near Eastern religious history edited byB. Becking, P. van der Horst and K. van der Toorn (1996, 2nd ed. 1999).The project will result in a reference work based on the archaeological,iconographic, and religio-historical analysis of visual sources of thesecond and first millennium BCE depicting deities and demons. Visualsources to be considered range from monumental and static public art tominor and moveable objects such as seals and amulets, often pertaining tomore personal piety. The geographical scope extends from Egypt to Iran,and from Greece to Arabia, with a particular focus on the Levant. Theproject is presently designed to include c. 300 articles, to be authoredby c. 70 expert scholars from 13 countries. An international team ofadvisors will provide introductory essays discussing the specific ruleswhich govern the visual representation of the divine and the demonic invarious parts of the ancient world.
