Lay summary
The aim of this research, which follows up on a first project that lasted three years, is to build a computerized psycholinguistic model of word recognition in spoken French (single words and pairs of words). We take into account various phonological phenomena (enchaînement, schwa deletion), dialectal differences (Parisian French, Swiss French) and the type of processing (sequential and simultaneous). The model uses a lexicon of some 17,000 words, a localist connectionist architecture, and specific mechanisms (e.g. a position processor, connection groupings, etc.). The model simulates well known single word effects (word frequency, word length, uniqueness point) as well as effects found in pairs of words (e.g.schwa deletion, enchaînement with and without liaison, etc.).
